Why We Offer the Best Heli Elopement Wedding Wanaka
The best heli elopement wedding Wanaka can offer is for couples who want their day to feel extraordinary from the very first moment. The flight itself becomes part of the celebration, sweeping you over scenery so stunning it hardly seems real. When you land on a secluded summit or glacier surrounded by towering mountains, the sense of space and stillness creates a backdrop that no traditional venue could ever match.
There is also a wonderful freedom in eloping this way. Without a long guest list or a rigid schedule, the day belongs entirely to you, shaped around your love story rather than anyone else's expectations. Many couples tell us this is exactly what made their wedding feel so personal, unhurried, and deeply romantic.
Imagine soaring over mirror-still lakes, golden valleys, and snow-capped ranges before touching down in a place few people ever reach. With only the two of you, your celebrant, and your photographer present, the moment feels intimate, honest, and completely yours. We take care of every detail behind the scenes so that all you have to do is climb aboard, relax, and savour the magic.

Breathtaking Landing Sites
Wanaka offers some of the most extraordinary ceremony locations in the country. Picture standing on top of Coromandel Peak, ringed by sweeping alpine views in every direction, or saying I do on the pristine ice of Isobel Glacier deep within Mount Aspiring National Park. Surrounded by glaciers, rivers, and alpine lakes, with Mount Aspiring rising in the distance, these settings feel truly otherworldly.
Each location carries its own sense of drama and beauty, and the scenery shifts gracefully with the seasons. Whether you dream of a snowy summit, a glacier ceremony, or a ridge with views to the horizon, the landscape rises to the occasion. Our local knowledge helps us match your vision to the ideal landing spot, taking the conditions and your personal style into account.

Chapel Elopements bring a sense of tradition and occasion to your ceremony without the scale of a full church wedding. The intimacy of a small chapel, surrounded by Queenstown's natural grandeur, creates a beautifully balanced celebration.

What Our Packages Include
Every couple is different, which is why our best heli elopement wedding Wanaka packages are built around all-inclusive options designed to remove the stress from planning. A typical package brings together everything you need for a seamless day, including the scenic helicopter flight, a registered celebrant and witnesses, professional photography to capture each moment, and thoughtful finishing touches such as a bouquet, boutonniere, and a celebratory champagne toast.
The result is an experience that feels effortless from beginning to end. We coordinate with experienced flight operators and trusted local suppliers so you never have to chase details or worry about logistics. You simply choose your style and your date, and we take care of the rest.

Photography Among the Peaks
The landscapes you reach by helicopter are a photographer's dream, and we make the most of every breathtaking angle. From the crystal waters far below to the snow and rock beneath your feet, every direction offers a view worth keeping. With Mount Aspiring rising behind you, our photographers know exactly where the light falls best and how to capture both the scale of the scenery and the emotion of your day.
These images become a lasting record of one of the most meaningful moments of your life. Long after the flight has ended, you will be able to look back and relive the views, the adventure, and the quiet moments shared between just the two of you. We treat every photograph as a piece of your story, told with care and artistry.
Planning Made Simple
One of the biggest worries couples have about a heli wedding is the logistics, especially when a helicopter and remote terrain are involved. We remove that concern entirely. Our experienced team manages the paperwork, coordinates the flight, and builds a clear timeline so you never have to wonder what comes next.
We also plan ahead for Wanaka's changeable alpine weather. A backup landing site and an alternative timing plan are always part of our preparation, so a shift in conditions never means a shift in the magic of your day. This careful planning is what allows you to stay relaxed and fully present throughout.

The Questions Worth Asking Before You Say I Do
Eloping in New Zealand is simple in spirit and specific in its details. Below are the ten questions our couples ask most often, from marriage licences to mountain weather, answered honestly so the practical side is settled long before your ceremony begins, and the two of you are free to simply stand still in it. Eloping Weddings gathered these from years of enquiry calls, late-night emails from the other side of the world, and the small worries couples mention only once they finally feel comfortable asking.
No residency or citizenship is required of either partner. Visitors are warmly welcome to marry in New Zealand, and you can apply for your marriage licence online from anywhere in the world, whether you are already here or still counting down the days until you land. Only one of you needs to submit the application, though the form asks for details about both, so keep passports and full legal names handy.
The licence itself costs $158 NZD and is a separate cost from anything your celebrant or planner charges. Same-sex marriage has been fully legal in New Zealand since 2013, so every couple, regardless of where home is, is equally free to marry on our lakesides, ridgelines and shorelines. If either of you has been married before, you will simply need to show that the previous marriage has legally ended, which your planner can talk you through.
Three things make a New Zealand marriage legal: a marriage licence, a registered celebrant, and witnesses to sign the register alongside you. Your licence must be arranged at least three working days before the ceremony and stays valid for three months, so timing does matter more than most couples expect on arrival. It costs $158 NZD, with celebrant fees charged separately on top; a personalised ceremony lets your celebrant set their own fee and write vows with you, while a registry-style ceremony has a fixed $175 celebrant fee but must take place during business hours on a weekday, never on a public holiday.
The application also asks for the exact place, or places, you intend to marry, including a back-up location, which is one detail worth settling early rather than on the morning itself. We at Eloping Weddings manage this paperwork with you step by step from the moment you enquire, and can also provide trusted witnesses if you are marrying without family present.
Legally, three working days is all New Zealand asks for. Practically, the celebrants, pilots, florists and photographers who work our most sought-after locations book out months ahead, especially across summer (December to February) and the shoulder seasons either side of it. If your travel dates are already set, reaching out four to six months beforehand gives you the widest choice of location, vendor and light.
Couples chasing a quieter, snow-dusted alpine scene often look to winter instead, when demand eases, flights are calmer in the early morning, and the mountains take on an entirely different, more hushed character. That said, we have brought elopements together on far shorter notice than that, sometimes with only a few weeks between the first phone call and the ceremony, so a tight timeline is a reason to ask us, not a reason to hold back.
Aotearoa’s beauty is inseparable from its changeable weather, so every itinerary is built with a considered alternative from the start: a second location already named on your marriage licence, a shifted ceremony time, or, for heli elopements, a later window that same day once cloud or wind has moved on. A lakeside ceremony might simply shift under cover for a passing squall; a summit flight might swap a Queenstown ridge for a clearer valley an hour away.
Your planner and pilot make the final call on the morning itself, choosing safety first and the view second, always, and they will talk you through the decision rather than leaving you guessing by the phone. In our experience, a change of plan rarely produces a lesser day, only a different and equally memorable one, and more than a few of our favourite photographs came from a forecast nobody expected.
Yes, absolutely. Eloping simply means a ceremony designed around the two of you, not one that automatically excludes everyone else. Some couples invite a small handful of loved ones to witness and celebrate; others prefer full privacy, with witnesses drawn from our own trusted circle instead. Both are equally valid choices, and we shape the day around whichever version of “just us” feels right, including a livestream option for family watching from afar and a toast held over video call once the vows are done.
Many couples also choose to hold a larger celebration back home later, treating the New Zealand ceremony as the legal and deeply personal heart of the story, with the party, the seating chart and the extended guest list still to come.
Our pilots are commercially licensed, fly these exact routes daily, and make every call based on safety rather than schedule. If conditions ground the flight, your ceremony shifts to a ground-based back-up location already built into your plan, or to a later window that same day wherever possible. No couple is left standing at the helipad without a plan.
This flexibility is already factored into your package, so a weather delay never becomes an unexpected cost, and your celebrant, photographer and witnesses simply move with you to wherever the day ends up. Couples who would rather not fly at all can still have every part of the heli experience’s romance, the altitude, the isolation, the view, translated into a ground-based alpine ceremony instead.
A marriage held legally in New Zealand is recognised in the vast majority of countries, since most legal systems honour a marriage validly performed where it took place. Even so, the process for registering or recording that marriage at home does vary by country, and some countries may ask for your New Zealand marriage certificate to be translated or formally authenticated before it is accepted.
We at Eloping Weddings recommend a quick check with your local registry office or embassy, particularly if you are changing your name or need the marriage recognised for immigration purposes, well before you travel rather than after. You will leave New Zealand with a certified marriage certificate to support whatever comes next, and we are always happy to point you toward the right office if you are unsure where to start.
Not at all. Several of our celebrants regularly conduct ceremonies in more than one language, and we can also arrange translated vows or an interpreter present on the day, depending on what would make the moment feel most like yours. Simply let us know your first language when you enquire, and we will match you with a celebrant who can speak to you, not around you, so the words you exchange feel like your own and not a translation of someone else’s.
This extends to your paperwork too; if any of your identity documents are not in English, we can advise on what translation or certification is required before your application goes in.
Yes, without exception. New Zealand was among the first countries in the world to legalise same-sex marriage, back in 2013, and same-sex couples marry here every week in exactly the same places, under exactly the same paperwork, as anyone else. A number of our own celebrants and photographers are part of the community they serve, and every destination on our list, from lakeside to alpine summit, is offered equally, with no asterisk attached and no separate conversation needed.
If you are travelling from a country where your marriage may not yet be legally recognised, we are glad to talk that through honestly with you, and to help you plan a day that still feels wholly, unapologetically yours.
Dress for the landscape as much as the occasion: a windproof layer for alpine sites, sturdy footwear for tussock and rock, and an outfit you can move freely in if a helicopter or a stiff breeze is involved. Long, flowing fabric photographs beautifully against the mountains but can catch in a downdraught, so your planner will talk you through what a specific location tends to call for well before you pack your bags, right down to what to do about hair and veils in the wind.
Photographs typically arrive in two stages: a small set of edited highlights within a few days of your ceremony, followed by your complete gallery within four to six weeks, so the feeling of the day stays close long before the full story lands in your inbox.
A small note on the fine print. New Zealand’s marriage laws, fees and timelines are accurate as we understand them today, but rules like this do shift from time to time, and details such as witness requirements can vary slightly by circumstance. Your dedicated celebrant and planner will always walk you through the exact requirements for your specific day before anything is locked in, so nothing here is the final word, only the honest starting point.
